Safety Shoe with ToF sensors
The solution developed by VRaktion are intelligent safety shoes for the German company ELTEN GmbH - equipped with time-of-flight laser sensors (ToF) and actuators to prevent accidents in advance. Shoes have the advantage over other protective clothing that they can be worn the entire working day and cannot simply be taken off.
Specifically, after evaluating various sensors and actuators and approaches, VRaktion has developed a modular framework for safety shoes that can detect obstacles. The main component of this solution are four time-of-flight laser sensors that are installed in the left and right shoes at the front and rear. The sensors are controlled by a logic board based on a Bluetooth chipset from. The logic board processes the sensor data and communicates with the peripherals, which can consist of smartphones, smart watches or AR smart glasses. Actuators for direct signal transmission when obstacles are detected are high-performance LEDs for illuminating the radius of action and vibration motors for haptic feedback directly on the foot.
The functionality in interaction with augmented reality data glasses (VUZIX) should be emphasized. In a kind of reversing camera, the user is shown obstacles and their distance to the shoe wearer in the field of vision. The safety shoes were presented to the public in 2017 and 2019 at the A + A trade fair in Düsseldorf (together with the German safety shoe manufacturer ELTEN) and at the CES 2020 in Las Vegas together with the AR glasses manufacturer and VRaktion partner VUZIX.
